In 2010, self described Entrepreneur and Music Publicist Lashaun Turner developed TRC (Artist Influencer)  Social Media with a vision to become a source content provider for social networks. Lashaun  developed several lifestyle and entertainment webzines including an award nominated blog and then built social connections across all the major networking platforms to share this content. Lashaun’swriting style and abilities led her to become an established blogger & contributor to other popular globally recognized magazines like YoRaps, Gorilla Leak, Yahoo, Black Vibes and many others.
After work on the play “GOD Is Watching You” the business venture evolved to include Look Like A Star P.R, working as a Publicist with Actors, Musicians, & Entrepreneurs to increase and manage public Interest in their creative assets. Lashaun has represented clients such as Atlanta rapper Bone Crusher, Coast2Coast DJ Fred Malone, International Pop Star Natalia Damini, and Mysterious Ent a Major Indie Record Label. The company leverages an extensive network of connections to offer a distribution circuit for individuals needing targeted exposure in an Urban Niche environment.
In 2012 the company re-branded itself URBAN STARZ MEDIA & P.R , with a continued focus on becoming a strong voice for the Urban Artist and Entrepreneur in the emerging New Media realm that is the Internet.
In August 2012 the company launched the only Licensed Independent Internet Radio Station in Los Angeles, playing Urban Indie music 24/7 at Urban Indie Radio- Los Angeles. Lashaun is also the Creator, Executive Producer and Host of the Blaze Indie L.A Show a popular syndicated webcast-radio show broadcast weekly .

Since 2010

  1. Lashaun Turner, what made you pick this industry as a profession?

The industry sort of picked me. I began social networking back in the days when Black Planet was active. I was a very active member of the News sections and forums and began to develop an online persona that I parlayed into my own popular Blog and Radio show known as the “Ms Rant” show. I became a You-Tube partner and was even interviewed by the Associated Press. Eventually I started getting approached by indie artists to do write-ups and features on them and that’s how I was introduced to the indie music industry. After that I become an established blogger & contributor on other popular globally recognized magazines like YoRaps, and Gorilla Leak. I realized that the connections I’d made over the years social networking and my ability to write were a skill set publicists have, and, artists would pay for- so I launched my company with a focus on becoming a strong voice for the Urban Artist and Entrepreneur in the emerging New Media realm that is the Internet.

  1. Lashaun Turner, what do you feel you bring different to the PR game, that your clients benefit from?

Urban Starz Media & P.R delivers Multimedia Publicity Globally through content development, hosting, sharing and distribution throughout various platforms. So, when I began my business I launched several artist discovery platforms that became entities in and of themselves. Such as Urban Indie Radio Los Angeles which is in its 3rd year as Los Angeles very own Urban Indie Music Streaming station 24/7. We have play-listed and given exposure to thousands of artists over the years.

I also created the Blaze Indie L.A show that is now a standalone Music Review show where we also feature artists. The show was picked up as an original content webisode by Vevo and is syndicated all over the world through a distribution deal I acquired. Its things like this that set my company apart from other firms- I innovate and create platforms for exposure in addition to the traditional tools publicists use i.e press releases, pitches and marketing. Because I started out early in social networking I’ve been able to build my own networks to a reach of more than 3 million connections and the majority are music focused connects. I also have my own personal database of 15,000 artists, Dj’s, radio etc.

So clients come to us for services throughout my outlets and/or for a comprehensive exposure plan which I always customize to each artist and their particular situation. And obviously because of our assets other publicists seek my company out to get exposure for their clients in my outlets.

  1. Lashaun Turner, what are the pro’s and con’s of being a Publicist?

Publicity never stops! You always have to be on as a publicist, you usually work 24/7.  Clients can be demanding, and there are so many opportunities out there that it is impossible to navigate through it all even though you sometimes feel like you have to in order to benefit the client. It’s harder getting media coverage for up & coming acts, which is my niche.  Keeping up with all the artists, scheduling, communications etc. can be overwhelming and exhausting at times.

The upside is you get to help artists realize their dreams of getting exposure for their music & help them move to the next level in their careers.

  1. Lashaun Turner, who are some people that you have worked with and do you rather work with artist or companies?

I have represented legendary Atlanta rapper Bone Crusher, Coast2Coast Dj Fred Malone, International Pop Singer Natalia Damini, Mysterious ENT,  E Brock and Dino Tha Don, Dread Head Wayne, American Monster Guild -to name a few. And I have hundreds of exposure credits including R&B group Hi-5,  Ensayne Wayne ( Drum Squad) Jhevon Paris,  Chinkie Brown, Fly Boyz Team, Young Dougie and El Dabarge Jr,  American Idol Alumni Corey Clark, Xfactor Lorie Moore, Actor Vincent Ward (The Walking Dead) Reality star Talia Coles and the list goes on & on with exposure credits, interviews, write-ups etc.

Right now it’s a toss- up between working with artists or companies. I currently represent 2 companies and 2 artists- i would have to say it’s probably actually easier to do artists because there are more blogs, magazines, websites and radio shows geared to them than with the corporate side. However, the companies I work with are also music related businesses so I’m pitching them to a lot of the same sources. Corporations usually have an identity  brand in use that I’m exposing , whereas, with artists I often have to help them create their brand and then expose it..

My company also works with corporate accounts on pre/post event publicity through our media credentials and we have covered major events like the BET Experience and Concert venues etc. Which is a lot of fun.

  1. Lashaun Turner, you are also the owner of Urban Starz Media. What made you want to start your own company and not work for a firm?

I’ve always wanted to succeed in my own business. When you look at what other companies like record labels are looking for in a publicist and what I bring you can see I’m clearly not your textbook publicist. I didn’t go to school for public relations or journalism, however,  It’s the entrepreneurial drive that I think exists naturally in me that made me want to build my company from a unique and different mold- one that I created.   And, that’s why I describe my company as a Hybrid.

  1. Lashaun Turner, tell us about The Blaze Indie LA Webcast/Radio Show and what part do you play in this masterpiece of a show?

The show is an internationally syndicated Web Series and Radio Show dedicated to keeping the BAD MUSIC out of the Universe by giving honest and knowledgeable criticism to the hobbyist artist and putting Good Music on the MAP by gaining exposure for serious artists by playing their songs during the Syndicated 1.5 hour Web/Radio Broadcast. The show specializes in the critique of Urban Genre Music by Indie Artists with the occasional Major Artist and Label submitting music for review also. I created and produce the show. I am also the lead on-air personality along with Insane, Micangelow and Tony Roq. We have had well over 100K viewers after the 1st year.

  1. Lashaun Turner, what do you love about the entertainment business and what do you dislike about the entertainment business?

It’s interesting because I myself have a small amount of celebrity because people know me and have seen me on the show, out at events, or on industry panels & seminars. I get a sense of the respect and I guess “the fame” as it were that being in the entertainment business provides, and its cool. But I’ve also seen a lot of the fake , phonies, and scammers out there.  And once your inside of certain circles you come to realize the entertainment industry should be left  as “entertainment” cause at the end of the day – it is what it is, and for me it’s just business.

  1. Lashaun Turner, let our followers know where they can find you and any events or news you may have coming down the pipeline?

Some of what’s coming down the pipeline revolve around my current clients. E Brock and Dino Tha Don have a certified Banger that’s making its way along the west coast called DREAD BANG. The duo are being considered for a major tour. Mysterious Ent just released Southern Riot V3 mixtape that we’re promoting. I have American Monster Guild out of Las Vegas whose CEO is Devon Brabham, he’s setting the standard for music management and his business model is starting to turn heads as he impacts the Las Vegas indie music scene.  These are just some of the happenings with the STARZ right now.

And for me personally, the Blaze Indie L.A Show is about to turn up about 10 notches as we prepare to relocate from our studio office to a television broadcast studio where artists will be able to perform live during our show.  I expect to expand my client load and bring on support staff as needed as I build Urban Starz Media & P.R, into the dominant urban indie music publicity company in California and quite possibly the world.
